The Japanese chemical group Mitsui Chemicals plans to produce thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) of the Milastomer brand at its US subsidiary Advanced Composites. As the Group announced in a press release, new facilities are to be built at Advanced Composites' headquarters in Sydney, Ohio. Capacities for about 6,000 tons of milastomer per year are planned. Construction is scheduled to begin in January and production is scheduled to start in October next year. The amount of the investments associated with the project was not stated in the current mailing. The olefin-based TPE (PP/EPDM) from the Milastomer Group brand is mainly used for sealing profiles for car windows and as sheathing material in the automotive and building materials industries. With the current capacity expansion, Mitsui Chemicals is responding to the further increase in demand in North America. To date, the Milastomer Group has only produced in Japan, China and Europe. Most recently, the Group expanded the corresponding capacities at the Sodegaura site in the Japanese prefecture of Chiba. The Mitsui subsidiary Advanced Composites currently produces various TPE and polypropylene compounds in Sydney, Nashville, Tennessee and Aguascalientes, Mexico. Tokyo-based Mitsui Chemicals reported sales growth of ten percent to JPY 959.8 billion (7.355 billion Euro) for the first three quarters of fiscal 2017/18, with operating income up 6 percent to JPY 75.7 billion (580 million Euro) and net income up 22 percent to JPY 60.9 billion (467 million Euro).
