Integra Plastics: Bulgarian Borealis Subsidiary Switches to rPP

The Bulgarian recycling company Integra Plastics, a subsidiary of Austrian plastics group Borealis, is upgrading its facilities to produce recycled polypropylene (rPP).

Borealis recently announced this in a press release. As part of a modernization effort, the company is installing Borealis’ proprietary "Borcycle M" mechanical polyolefin recycling technology at the Integra Plastics site in Elin Pelin, near Sofia. Starting this month, the company will begin producing rPP instead of recycled low-density polyethylene (rLDPE). At the same time, the facility's current annual recycling capacity of 20,000 tonnes is expected to be further increased.

Borealis is responding to the growing demand for rPP in consumer packaging, the automotive sector, and household appliances. The recycled materials will either be directly processed or integrated by Borealis into compound production.

Dirk Langhammer, Vice President Circular Economy Solutions at Borealis, stated in the release: "With this upgrade, our customers gain reliable access to high-quality recycled materials. Combined with Borealis’ top-tier products and compounding expertise, we are uniquely positioned to support our customers in their transition to sustainable solutions."

Vienna-based Borealis is 75% owned by Austrian oil and petrochemical company OMV, with the remaining 25% held by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). According to its own figures, Borealis is a global leader in advanced and sustainable polyolefin solutions, one of the top polyolefin recyclers in Europe, and a major producer of base chemicals. In the 2024 fiscal year, the group generated a net profit of €566 million on revenues of €7.85 billion.
