Arkema: Expansion project in Serquigny completed

The French chemicals group Arkema has completed the expansion of elastomer production at its plant in Serquigny.

The company announced this in a press release recently. Accordingly, a new plant for the production of traditional elastomers of the "Pebax" brand and biocircular elastomers of the "Pebax Rnew" brand was put into operation at the site in Normandy. Exact details of the plant's capacity are not available. However, according to the press release, the expansion in Serquigny will increase Arkema's total capacity for the production of "Pebax" elastomers by around 40 per cent.

With the expansion of "Pebax" production, Arkema is responding to the growing demand from customers, particularly in the sporting goods and consumer goods markets. Two years ago, the Group had already announced corresponding expansion plans.

In the current press release, Arkema manager Erwoan Pezron stated: "We are excited to start production after finalising this expansion of our capacity for 'Pebax' elastomers. This is a great opportunity for us to meet the growing demand in existing and new applications. At the same time, we can improve our processes and reduce water consumption at the site by around 25 per cent."

"Pebax" elastomers are thermoplastic elastomers (TPE-A) based on polyamide and polyether. The biocircular materials of the "Pebax Rnew" variant are obtained from renewable castor bean seeds. "Pebax" elastomers are used in the manufacture of running shoes and football boots, ski boots, technical textiles and electronic devices as well as in medical technology.

Arkema, which is based in Colombes near Paris, employs around 20,000 people worldwide. In the first nine months of the 2023 financial year, the listed group generated sales totalling 7.29 billion Euro, EBITDA of 1.17 billion Euro and a net profit of 546 million Euro.
