BASF: Modernized plant increases capacity for acid chlorides and chloroformates by 30 percent

BASF has commissioned a fully modernized plant for the production of acid chlorides and chloroformates at its Ludwigshafen Verbund site. The investment, amounting to a low triple-digit million-euro sum, increases production capacity by around 30 percent. With this expansion, the chemical company aims to ensure the long-term supply of its customers and strengthen its position in the global market for these intermediates.

The plant produces a portfolio of around 25 acid chlorides and chloroformates. These intermediates are used in applications including pharmaceuticals, crop protection products, organic peroxides, coatings, and plastics. In addition to Ludwigshafen, BASF operates another production facility for this product group in Yeosu, South Korea.

Since 2025, BASF has used electricity from renewable sources for the entire portfolio manufactured in Ludwigshafen, including upstream raw material processes. According to the company, this reduces the product carbon footprint by an average of 19 percent. The calculation covers Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3.1 emissions and is based on 2025 production volumes. Product specifications, certifications, and ordering processes remain unchanged.

According to BASF, the calculation method is aligned with ISO 14067:2018 and the December 2024 version of Together for Sustainability’s Product Carbon Footprint Guideline for the Chemical Industry. TÜV Rheinland assessed BASF’s “Scott” methodology as part of a methodological review.
