On April 26, 2012, headline sponsor Starlinger recycling technology hosted a visit to their Technical Center in Weissenbach, Austria, as part of the programme of AMI’s Stretch & Shrink Film conference. This event, established as a forum for the international stretch and shrink film industry, is classified as an important meeting point for discussing key trends and market developments among the industry’s players. The visit to the Starlinger recycling technology Technical Center took place right after the conference in Vienna ended. More than 50 visitors from 20 countries took the opportunity to see recycling technology for a wide range of film materials. The main feature was the recycling unit recoSTAR basic 85, shown in operation with nip roll feeder for recycling of stretch film production scrap on reels. The equipment works in automatic mode for in-line applications, featuring stand-by mode and automatic start-up, and in semi-automatic mode for off-line and mixed applications. As Starlinger points out the polyethylene melt is treated with great care during the recycling process, which results in a high-quality end product: "The regranulate can be used at a rate of up to 100 per cent in the production of new film. In most applications the mixing ratio is, however, up to 80 per cent regranulate plus 20 per cent virgin resin, a combination that yields stretch/shrink film with comparable physical properties as if made entirely of virgin resin", says Starlinger. The tour through the Technical Center, used for R&D and performing customer test runs, not only included equipment for the processing of production scrap but also for post-consumer applications such as PET bottle-to-bottle or polyolefine recycling.
