BARLOG plastics: Light and loose screws to demonstrate metal substitution

With the ironic slogan "Got a screw loose?" the metal substitute specialist BARLOG plastics shows a production of plastic screw at the K 2010.

BARLOG plastics focuses on integrated functions, cost optimisation and lightweight design. The company is not only looking out for complete assembly solution potentials, but also pays attention to lightweight design opportunities that can be successfully utilized by multiplicators. A current example is the realization of already existing models of metal screws in plastics, in this case the well-proven Delta PT screw from EJOT, a company specialized on joining techniques.

First made of steel, then aluminium and now plastics

The samples were modelled by BARLOG plastics and its technology partner BaHsys basing on the EJOT Delta PT screw concept. Upon completion of the first series of tests, the specialists have confirmed that these joining elements made of HT-PPA Grivory HTV-5H1 from EMS with 50% fibre glass reinforcement, a thermoplastic building material, are technically safe. The same specialists anticipate “ a far-reaching potential for lightweight design”, because:
The new screw is about 80% lighter than its steel counterpart.

“This could be seen as the ultimate stage of evolution in innovative material utilization”, is the opinion expressed by the joining technology specialist EJOT on using plastics for screws, following the presentation of utilisable samples by BARLOG plastics and BaHsys.

The production of these innovative screws, their assembly suitability and special fitness for use in lightweight components will be demonstrated during the K 2010 on both companies´ booth on the joint NRW stand.

But here as well they want to give more ideas for integrating additional functions. Next to virtually conventional screw models, another type of screw with an additional function will therefore drop out of the running injection moulding machine at the booth. With these screws, interested trade fair visitors will be invited to screw together an assembly destined “for a good purpose”.
