IK: Plastics packaging again shows growth

In 2005 producers of plastics packaging were further able to increase their production levels. The IK Industrieverband Kunststoffverpackungen e. V. (Association of Plastics Packaging Producers, (www.kunststoffverpackungen.de) has announced that the industry it represents earned 10.5 billion Euros last year, which is an increase of 5.8 percent. At 3.8 million tons, production also showed a new high, though here the growth rate of 2.2% remained lower than the increase in turnover.

The results of a current survey of member companies allow the IK to view the future with optimism: Identifiable demand should lead to a production increase of around three percent and a turnover of about eleven billion Euros (+5%) in 2006.

The industry’s innovations meet both the demands of the wider packing industry and the consumer: combining transparency and flexibility, higher barrier properties and marginal weight. Resealable portion packagings, which keep food products fresh for longer through controlled atmosphere, and soon to be introduced “intelligent" packaging, are proof that the industry is dynamic and able to adapt to changing markets.

The IK represents an industry consisting of around 700 producers of plastics packaging and films with a workforce of 60,000.

The level of representation by the IK – based on turnover – is between 60 and 85 percent in each sector; a high level in comparison with other industrial associations.

Plastics make up the largest single segment of the German packaging market with a share of around 43%.
