Gravita: Indians launch another PP recycling plant in Africa

The Indian recycling company Gravita India has opened a new plant for recycling polypropylene (PP) in Tanzania.

The company announced this in a press release recently. The plant has the capacity to produce 1,800 tonnes of rPP granulate per year. The investment totalled around INR 22.5 million (EUR 250,000). The location of the plant in Tanzania was not disclosed in the current press release. However, Gravita already operates a plant for the recycling of batteries in Zegereni, west of the capital Dar es Salaam, where a plant for the recycling of used rubber was also opened in May.

With the opening of the new PP recycling plant, Gravita is continuing to expand its capacities at various locations worldwide and at the same time increasing the plastics segment's share of total sales. In Africa, the company opened a new PP recycling plant in Ghana last year. The initial annual capacity there is 1,200 tonnes of rPP granulate, but there are already plans to expand this to up to 2,700 tonnes.

Gravita operates further plastics recycling plants in India, Senegal and Mozambique. In Nicaragua, however, a complex for 9,600 tonnes of rPET and rPP per year was recently sold due to a lack of growth prospects. Gravita's plastic recyclates are mainly purchased by plastics companies in Europe and Asia.

The Gravita Group is one of the leading suppliers of recycled non-ferrous metals such as lead and aluminium, which are obtained by recycling batteries and accumulators. In addition to plastics recycling, the range of services is complemented by the planning and development of complete systems for battery recycling. The company has a total of twelve locations in India, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Ghana, Togo, Senegal and Mozambique.

Gravita, which is based in Jaipur in the north-west Indian state of Rajasthan, generated revenues totalling INR 15.8 billion (EUR 173 million) in the first six months of the 2023/24 financial year and achieved a net profit of INR 1.1 billion (EUR 12 million).
