Myplas: South Africans launch recycling plant in Minnesota

The South African recycling company Myplas commissioned a new plastics recycling plant in the US state of Minnesota in December.

According to a press release from subsidiary Myplas USA, the plant was built at the Rogers site near Minneapolis. In the long term, the complex will have the capacity to mechanically recycle up to 40,800 tonnes of flexible plastic packaging annually and employ around 200 people. The investment volume to date has totalled around USD 13 million.

According to the press release, Myplas is developing the plant in Rogers with the financial participation of US film producer Charter Next Generation (CNG), food companies General Mills and Schwan's Company as well as other investors. The project is also supported by the regional business initiatives Mbold, AEPW and Closed Loop Partners as well as the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).

CNG CEO Kathy Bolhous said, "Flexible films play a critical role in ensuring food freshness and shelf life, but effectively recovering and recycling these materials is a challenge. CNG is excited to celebrate this milestone and work with Myplas and our partners at Mbold to realise the vision of a circular economy for flexible films in the northern Midwest."

Myplas operates a recycling plant for solid plastic packaging in Cape Town, South Africa, with an annual capacity of 19,200 tonnes. The recycled plastics, primarily polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE) and polypropylene (PP), are sold under the "Mypolen" brand.
