Starlinger: Austrian machine manufacturer publishes second sustainability report

“Starlinger is one of those medium-sized Austrian companies that have been taking their social responsibility seriously in a variety of ways for a long time”, explains Ilona Wimmer, head of the CSR department at Starlinger. ”We published our first sustainability report in 2022 – an analysis of our status quo at the time in the area of CSR and sustainability. Based on this, we defined measures, many of which are already being implemented or have since been completed. The report now available provides an overview of what has happened at Starlinger in the last two years in terms of sustainability and CSR.”

In addition to a materiality analysis, in which internal and external stakeholders gave their assessments on a total of 18 sustainability topics, the new sustainability report includes detailed evaluations of energy consumption, emissions and waste generation in the company, as well as information on the implemented energy-saving measures. In the area of social affairs, the project “Fit & X'sund Weissenbach”, which has been running since 2023, is one of the ways in which the company addresses the issue of health and satisfaction in the workplace. Starlinger also regularly supports sustainability-oriented research projects conducted by associations and research institutions. In addition to other projects, there is currently, for example, a research collaboration with the Josef Ressel Center for Recycling Strategies for Textiles (ReSTex) at the Biotech Campus Tulln of the Wiener Neustadt University of Applied Sciences, in which Starlinger is playing a major role in a project for the recycling of clothing and textiles made of cotton-polyester blended fabrics.

Sustainable, environmentally friendly and socially responsible business practices are not only the focus within the company itself. With its systems and packaging products, Starlinger also takes it to customers around the world: when designing its sack production and recycling systems, the supplier of machines and technology for the production of plastic woven sacks places particular emphasis on criteria such as the lowest possible energy consumption, avoidance of production waste and high production efficiency. “Designed for Recycling” is also the consistent motto for the plastic woven sacks produced on Starlinger lines.

“In the plastic packaging industry, it is especially important to live sustainability both internally and externally”, emphasizes Angelika Huemer, managing partner of Starlinger & Co Gesellschaft m.b.H. ”As a machine manufacturer, we design the production processes of our plants so that our customers can use them to produce with as little resource consumption and as few emissions as possible – whether it's reusable and easily recycled plastic woven sacks that can be reused several times and are easy to reprocess, or recycled plastic that is returned to the product cycle in this way. Used plastics are not waste for us, but a valuable raw material for new products.”

Ilona Wimmer has been responsible for CSR at Starlinger since August 2024 and, together with her team, she is in charge of initiating and implementing various projects. Having been with the company for over 20 years and previously working in controlling, she has taken over the management of the department from Clarissa Graf, who has built up and managed the CSR and sustainability division at Starlinger since 2019.

The next step will be to prepare for sustainability reporting under the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). “In the coming months, we will have to focus intensively on data collection and data management, among other things, so that we can present the sustainability report for our 2025/26 annual financial statements in a legally compliant manner”, Wimmer concluded.
