Plastic Pakistan: Hundreds of PE bag manufacturers face closure

A new order issued on February 6, 2008 from the Provincial Sindh Government had put a ban on the production and sale of polyethylene bags with less than 300-micron thickness. This step has been taken on recommendation of the city district government of Karachi that had pointed out that the bags are causing choking of sewerage system thus obstructing the flow of wastewater. The new regulation became effective through section 144 CrPC.

Hundreds of polyethylene bag making factories are facing closure now. Insiders say that over 100 factories have already been closed down in Sindh due to an earlier ban of polythene bags with thickness less than 30 micron. The recent ban was a surprising move as no machinery is available to manufacture bags of such thickness. However, obviously the ban had proved to be ineffective due to the supply of less than 30 micron bags by manufacturers of other provinces (e.g. Punjab) and also imports from China.

Advert

According to General Secretary of All Karachi Plastic Bags Manufacturers and Dealers Association Khawaja Ansar, there are about 1000 industries presently engaged in manufacturing of polythene bags in the city, whereas over 2000 shopkeepers are engaged in this trade.
