Coveris: Acquisition of Gefo Expands CPP Film Capacity in Germany

Coveris has acquired the business of Gefo Folienbetrieb GmbH in Gera, thereby expanding its production capacity for cast polypropylene (CPP) films. With this acquisition, the European packaging manufacturer aims to strengthen its portfolio of recyclable mono-material solutions and further expand its position in the flexible packaging market.

The acquisition comes amid growing demand for sustainable packaging concepts and increasing regulatory requirements stemming from the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations. At the same time, the integration of Gefo is expected to enhance vertical integration within the Coveris network and create additional synergies along the value chain.

CPP films are gaining importance in particular due to their recyclability and suitability for mono-material packaging solutions. Until now, Coveris operated only one CPP extrusion site in Kufstein, which, according to the company, had already reached its capacity limits.

With Gefo, Coveris is expanding both its production capacity and its application portfolio. Target markets include retortable packaging, lidding films, bags for bread and bakery products, medical packaging, and other non-food applications.

According to the company, the European CPP market is growing by around three percent annually. Applications such as retortable packaging, medical packaging, and lidding films are expected to grow by more than four percent. Key growth drivers include increasing sustainability requirements and the replacement of packaging materials that are difficult to recycle.

Coveris views the acquisition as part of its strategy to expand its portfolio of sustainable flexible packaging solutions and strengthen its production base for high-value CPP applications in Europe.
