Toray: Expansion of PPS Capacity in India

Japanese chemical group Toray Industries is planning a further expansion of its production of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS)-based compounds marketed under its “Torelina” brand.

According to a press release, subsidiary Toray Industries (India) will construct a new PPS plant at its Sri City site in the southeastern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The facility will have a capacity of approximately 3,000 tonnes per year. Commissioning is scheduled for April next year, with regular production expected to begin as soon as possible thereafter. No details were provided regarding the required investment.

With the new PPS plant, Toray is expanding its existing polyamide and PBT compound production capacities at the Sri City site. The company is responding to the continued growth in demand for domestically produced PPS plastics in India. In particular, demand is expected to increase from manufacturers of electric vehicles, electronic equipment, and household appliances.

Toray currently produces Torelina PPS compounds at its Tokai site near Nagoya in Japan and in Gunsan, South Korea. The group’s total PPS compound capacity currently stands at around 32,000 tonnes per year. Global sales of Torelina materials are also supported by the subsidiaries Toray Resins Europe in Germany and Toray Resin Co. (TREC) in the United States.

Toray Industries is regarded as the world’s largest producer of carbon fibers. In addition, the group manufactures and processes a broad range of synthetic fibers, plastics, and composite materials for applications across various industries. For fiscal year 2025/2026, which ended in March, the Tokyo-listed company reported operating profit of JPY 141.9 billion (EUR 768 million) and net profit of JPY 79.5 billion (EUR 430 million) on sales of JPY 2,585.1 billion (EUR 13.983 billion).
