Lego: Opening of global manufacturing innovation center

The Danish Lego Group has opened its first global manufacturing innovation center at its headquarters in Billund.

According to a press release, the new Kornmarken Campus will bring together the development, testing, and scaling of new technologies, materials, and products for the entire group at a single location. This centralized approach is intended to accelerate the transfer of innovations from concept to mass production across the company's global manufacturing network.

The newly constructed complex covers 47,000 m² and, together with the adjacent original factory, forms a manufacturing and innovation site of approximately 100,000 m², employing around 1,800 people. The campus includes a test and innovation center for new technologies, Lego elements, and packaging solutions, a materials laboratory dedicated to researching sustainable raw materials, a center for additive manufacturing equipped with advanced 3D printing technologies, a training academy, and a tool manufacturing facility.

Lego CEO Niels B. Christiansen said: "The Kornmarken Campus strengthens the Lego Group's foundation for future growth. By bringing together every aspect of manufacturing innovation in one location, we can accelerate the transformation of new ideas from concept to reality across our global operations network."

COO Carsten Rasmussen added: "The Lego Group employs some of the world's most talented engineers and skilled manufacturing professionals. This facility will provide them with the tools and technologies they need to expand the possibilities of product development and manufacturing, both today and in the future."

Sustainability played a key role in the planning and construction of the Kornmarken Campus. The 22,000 m² building is constructed primarily from mass timber and is expected to achieve the highest LEED Platinum certification for sustainable building design. Energy-efficient systems, rainwater management, and a partial power supply from a nearby 4 MW solar park help reduce the site's environmental footprint. In addition, Lego is currently building a new 80–100 MW solar park that will eventually supply all of the company's energy needs in Billund.
