Loop-it: Austria's first mattress recycler achieves 87% CO₂ savings

Around one year after its founding, Loop-it, the joint venture between Brantner green solutions and Neveon, has presented its first operational results. The company operates Austria's first industrial-scale facility for recycling used mattresses at its site in Oberwölbling, Lower Austria, and now processes up to 500 mattresses, or around seven tonnes of material, per working day. Annual processing capacity is approximately 110,000 mattresses.

According to the company, around 80% of the materials contained in mattresses can be recovered and reused as secondary raw materials. These include polyurethane foam, latex, and metals, which have previously been disposed of mainly through energy recovery by incineration. With more than one million mattresses reaching end of life in Austria each year, the company aims to establish a new material loop for resources that have so far seen little recycling.

A carbon footprint assessment conducted jointly with ClimatePartner highlights a significant difference between incineration and recycling. While the thermal treatment of an average mattress weighing 14 kilograms generates 26.47 kilograms of CO₂ emissions, the recycling process produces only 3.42 kilograms of CO₂. This represents a saving of 23.05 kilograms, or around 87%, in CO₂ emissions per mattress.

The recycling facility uses automated processes and artificial intelligence for material identification and process optimisation. The recovered recyclates serve as feedstock for both mechanical and chemical recycling processes and are intended to reduce the use of fossil-based raw materials in foam production. The processed material bales weigh around 350 kilograms for polyurethane and approximately 460 kilograms for latex.

Loop-it was founded in 2025 by circular economy company Brantner green solutions and foam manufacturer Neveon. The company was established at a time when Austria had not yet introduced an extended producer responsibility (EPR) scheme for mattresses. It positions itself as a pioneer of mattress recycling in Austria, with the goal of diverting materials that have traditionally been incinerated into a closed-loop raw materials cycle.
