Selenis Expands Specialty Copolyester Capacity in Portugal

Selenis is expanding its specialty copolyester production capacity in Portugal by acquiring production equipment from Polisan Hellas in Greece and relocating it to its Portuguese operations. The equipment will be integrated into the company’s ongoing site expansion. By 2028, Selenis aims to increase its installed annual capacity for specialty copolyesters to more than 200,000 tonnes across production sites in Portugal, Italy, Tunisia and the United States.

The acquisition will strengthen Selenis’ continuous polymerisation capabilities. This process is geared towards standardised, high-volume products and will primarily serve applications such as shrink sleeves, films and sheets. Batch production, meanwhile, will remain focused on specialty grades and customer-specific formulations.

Selenis is also pursuing a multi-site production strategy. Selected material grades are to be qualified at several locations, allowing customers to source products with identical specifications from different plants. The approach is intended to increase supply-chain flexibility and support more regionalised supply models.

The company has identified healthcare, 3D printing and textile-to-textile recycling as additional growth areas. For 3D printing applications, Selenis markets PETG and PCTG resins under the “Mimesis” brand. In textile recycling, its “Texnascis” activities focus on using recovered monomers as feedstock for new polyester materials.

The IMG Group is also evaluating further investments in Germany in the field of bio-based materials, as well as in Tunisia for textile-to-textile recycling based on DMT technology.
