Fraunhofer LBF focuses on recyclate stabilization and recycling-friendly component design

At Fakuma 2026, the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF will showcase methods for developing and evaluating technical plastic products. Key areas of focus include recyclate stabilization, closed-loop recycling, flame-retardant plastics, and the design of durable, recycling-friendly components.

For formulation development, the institute uses technologies including micro- and mini-extruders as well as online rheometry. These tools enable researchers to assess different combinations of materials and additives and to define suitable processing windows for recyclates with fluctuating quality. Other areas of research include antioxidants, PFAS-free processing aids, and chain extenders.

In the field of flame-retardant plastics recycling, Fraunhofer LBF is investigating so-called repair additives intended to reduce the loss of material properties caused by repeated processing. The research is also contributing to the “HFFR-Up2Cycle” project, which targets applications in the electrical and electronics, automotive, and cable industries.

The institute will also present the “Circulus” battery housing as a demonstrator. The component highlights the interplay between material selection, processing, mechanical and thermal performance, and design for recycling.
