Nonnenmann Adds Cooling Deflectors for Consistent Flow Cross-Sections

Nonnenmann GmbH has expanded its portfolio for tool and mould making with new cooling deflectors for riser bores in injection moulds. Marketed under the designation “ULE”, the components are designed for applications such as domes, cores, ribs and compartments, where they are intended to maintain a consistent flow cross-section throughout the cooling circuit.

Consistent Flow Geometry in Riser Bores
Conventional baffle-based solutions can result in variations in the effective flow cross-section within a riser bore. Nonnenmann’s ULE deflectors, by contrast, are designed so that the cross-section in the riser bore matches the diameter of the remaining cooling channels. This helps maintain a more uniform flow through the cooling circuit.

A constant, circular flow cross-section is important for efficient mould temperature control. Changes in cross-section can increase pressure losses, promote deposits and make it more difficult to establish turbulent flow. Effective temperature control, in turn, plays an important role in heat dissipation, cycle time and moulded-part quality.

Two Versions for 4 and 6 mm Cooling Channels
The ULE cooling deflectors are available in two versions. The ULE Ø4, article number HN00170, is designed for cooling bores with a diameter of 4 mm, while the ULE Ø6, article number HN00171, is intended for 6 mm bores.

Both versions are manufactured from 1.4301 stainless steel and supplied in a standard length of 250 mm. They can be cut to the required installation length. Depending on the version, the outer diameter is 8 or 10 mm, with the components manufactured to an h9 tolerance. Details on the required installation space are provided in the supplier’s technical documentation.

Designed for Mould Cooling Circuits
According to Nonnenmann, the deflectors are intended in particular to avoid varying cross-sections within a cooling circuit. When bore diameter, circuit length and flow rate are matched appropriately, this can help support turbulent flow.

Turbulent flow is commonly used in mould temperature control to improve heat transfer between the temperature-control medium and the mould, thereby supporting more effective and consistent cooling.

The components are suitable for a range of mould surface temperatures and are available from stock as standard parts. Nonnenmann also provides data sheets and installation instructions online.
