French engineering and technology company Technip Energies (T.EN) has been selected to carry out engineering work for a new petrochemical complex planned by Turkish producer Petkim. The companies announced in late September that they had signed agreements covering the integrated Process Design Package (PDP) and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the overall complex. T.EN will also license its technology for a planned steam cracker (MFSC). The FEED phase is expected to be completed by the end of next year and will provide the technical basis for the project’s final investment decision (FID), which is still pending. Petkim, part of Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil and gas group SOCAR, plans to build the new complex at its Aliağa site near Izmir. The project includes a steam cracker with annual capacities of 1.2 million tonnes of ethylene and 550,000 tonnes of propylene. Downstream units are planned to produce 850,000 tonnes/year of polyethylene (HDPE/LLDPE) and 550,000 tonnes/year of polypropylene (PP). Univation Technologies and Lummus Technology are expected to provide the PE and PP technologies, respectively. “We are pleased to support Petkim at this important stage in the development of its integrated petrochemical complex,” said T.EN executive Stéphane Mespoulhes. “By combining our ethylene technology with our engineering capabilities, we will support Petkim through the PDP and FEED phases as the project progresses through its technical development. This early involvement will help establish the technical foundations for an efficient, flexible and competitive project.” Petkim said the FEED phase is expected to cost a total of USD 70 million. According to earlier information from SOCAR, total investment in the new Aliağa petrochemical complex is expected to amount to around USD 7 billion. Technip Energies was formed five years ago following the spin-off of several businesses from French engineering group TechnipFMC. The company operates in 35 countries and employs more than 18,000 people worldwide. In fiscal 2025, the Euronext Paris-listed company generated revenue of around EUR 7.2 billion.
