Impetus: Dissolvable Injection Mould Cavities and Large-Format 3D Printing

Impetus Plastics Engineering GmbH will present two processes for plastics product development at Fakuma 2026: prototype production using dissolvable injection mould cavities and large-format additive manufacturing using polymer granules. The company will be exhibiting at Stand 3123 in Hall B3 as part of the Hromatka Group's joint stand. Other exhibitors include Grässlin, Plastoplan, Sax Polymers and Lenorplastics. Key areas of focus include applications in medical technology and the electrical and electronics industries.

Dissolvable Cavities for Production-Representative Injection-Moulded Prototypes
According to the company, its "DissolveTool" process enables the production of injection-moulded prototypes within 48 hours using additively manufactured mould cavities. The cavity is produced by 3D printing, inserted into an injection mould and selectively dissolved after the injection moulding process. This eliminates the need for a conventionally manufactured prototype mould.

The process is particularly suitable for complex geometries, undercuts and two-component parts. Combining an additively manufactured mould cavity with the injection moulding process allows plastic components to be tested under processing conditions comparable to those used in series production, without restricting the mould geometry to conventional manufacturing methods.

Large-Format 3D Printing Directly from Polymer Granules
Impetus will also demonstrate large-format additive manufacturing (LFAM) using its "Snowball" exhibit. The process enables the production of large-volume plastic components directly from polymer granules. The focus is on component design, process simulation, material validation and manufacturing using the company's own LFAM system.

Key technical challenges include interlayer adhesion, warpage, dimensional accuracy and the surface finish of the components. These factors play a significant role in determining whether large-format additively manufactured components are suitable for functional industrial applications. Impetus operates an LFAM technical centre at its Rosenheim site for development and manufacturing trials.

Impetus has been part of the Hromatka Group since 2024. The joint trade fair presence combines the partners' polymer distribution activities and the compounding expertise of Sax Polymers with Impetus' development, simulation and prototyping services.
