Italian private equity firm Nextalia Investment Management plans to acquire a 55 percent stake in Plastic Legno. Together with its subsidiary Resaplast, the company is set to form an independent group specializing in rigid plastic packaging for the food industry. Investments in production capacity, new technologies and further acquisitions are planned. The investment will be made through the Nextalia Capitale Rilancio fund and investment company Sunext Holding. Following completion of the transaction, Sunext Holding will hold a 55 percent stake in a newly established holding company. The Sunino family, the current owner, will retain a 45 percent stake and continue to act as an industrial partner. This is stated in documents published by the Italian Competition Authority (AGCM). As part of the restructuring, Plastic Legno and Resaplast will be separated from the existing Sunino Group and established as an independent packaging group with its own management structure. The remaining business activities, including promotional products and sportswear, will remain with the Sunino family. Paolo Sunino is expected to continue managing Plastic Legno as CEO. Plastic Legno, based in Castellamonte near Turin, manufactures rigid plastic packaging using injection moulding technology, primarily for the dairy and confectionery industries. According to the company, its production facility covers 35,000 square metres and is equipped with approximately 50 injection moulding machines with clamping forces ranging from 150 to 1,000 tonnes. The company employs around 100 people. Resaplast, a subsidiary acquired in 2024, operates another production facility in Conversano near Bari, covering 10,000 square metres and equipped with approximately 20 injection moulding machines. The company employs around 50 people and manufactures packaging containers, trays and lids made from polypropylene (PP), among other products. Together, the two companies supply more than 100 customers, including major Italian food manufacturers. Expansion of Production Capacity and Further Acquisitions Planned As part of a capital increase, Nextalia intends to provide additional funding to expand production capacity, support product development and enter new markets. Targeted acquisitions in Italy and abroad are also planned to strengthen the position of the newly established packaging group. One key focus will be the further development of recyclable mono-material packaging. In recent years, Plastic Legno has invested in in-mould labelling (IML) technology, among other areas. This process integrates labels directly into the packaging during injection moulding. The company aims to meet the requirements of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). According to the Italian industry publication Supply Chain Italy, formal completion of the transaction is expected by the end of 2026. Neither the purchase price nor the amount of the planned capital increase has been disclosed.
