DuPont™ Surlyn® Resin Adds a Touch of Glamour

A faceted closure, molded from DuPont™ Surlyn® PC2000 (www.dupont.com), adorns the latest fragrance from American pop-star Christina Aguilera. The manufacturer, Procter & Gamble prestige products of Cologne, Germany, selected the functional and aesthetic packaging material due to its glass-like transparency, its suitability for the production of complex, thick-walled parts and its processability. The closure, made of Surlyn® resin, adds a touch of glamour to the sensuously-formed bottle, decorated with a black lace design, which is rounded off with a black satin ribbon.

Procter & Gamble prestige products recognized the benefits of Surlyn®; many years ago. “We like using this packaging polymer from DuPont, mainly because the material presents designers with almost unlimited freedom when recreating their ideas. Parts with complex geometries can be injection-molded both quickly and efficiently. Surlyn® is as transparent as glass. However, it is significantly lighter. It bestows a high quality and prestigious appearance to the closure, and thus the bottle. Moreover the polymer has a warm and pleasant touch as well as a high chemical resistance to the perfume ingredients,” says Hans-Josef Klaas, responsible for package development for this project.

The closure is produced by Axilone Germany GmbH of Wiehl, Germany – part of the French group Axilone – which develops and manufactures high quality closure systems for the perfume and cosmetics market. The company is also well-versed in the usage of Surlyn®. “Faceted closures such as this one can be produced in a single shot and without the need for post-molding operations,” explains Carsten Wolansky, COO at Axilone. “Voids, which would affect the part’s transparent appearance, are consistently eliminated. In addition, the material is noted for is very low isotropic shrinkage. This is particularly important for perfume closures, as it guarantees a high degree of fitting accuracy, thus enabling their pleasantly-easy extraction from bottles.”
