DSD: Raising of high-grade plastics recycling

The 2003 Environmental Success Balance presented by the Dual System (www.gruener-punkt.de) thus confirms that the System has succeeded not only in meeting the recovery rates prescribed by the German Packaging Ordinance, but also in greatly reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Last year each German citizen brought an average of 72.6 kilogrammes of recyclables to the Dual System’s collection containers. The total collected in the past year figured 5.99 million tonnes, as compared to 6.32 million tonnes in 2002. This brings the sum total to a good 57 million tonnes of packaging consigned to verified recycling since the Dual System was founded. One reason for the drop in quantities collected is the mandatory deposit on certain types of beverage containers, which entered into force at the beginning of 2003. Quantities of composites, to which drinks cans count, have dropped particularly. A further effect of the mandatory deposit scheme is that one-way glass and PET bottles subject to a deposit are now no longer licensed under the Dual System. On the other hand, beverage carton quantities have risen sharply. The proportion of high-grade recycling at the level of materials has been raised from 43 to 52 per cent for plastics.
