Veolia: PET recycling plant launched in Japan

The French waste management company Veolia has commissioned a new plant for recycling used PET bottles in Japan.

According to a press release, the complex in Tsuyama in the west of the island of Honshū has the capacity to produce around 25,000 tonnes of food-grade PET recyclates (rPET) per year. Full capacity utilisation is expected during the spring.

The recycling plant was built as part of the Circular PET joint venture established in 2020 by Veolia with the Japanese retail group Seven & i Holdings and the conglomerate Mitsui & Co. The JV ensures the supply of used PET bottles to the complex through partnerships with companies and municipalities. No information was provided on the level of investment associated with the project.

The head of Veolia Japan, Guillaume Dourdin, explained in the current press release: "Veolia is a global player in plastics recycling with over 30 years of experience. With the Circular PET plant and in cooperation with local communities, Veolia is participating in 'bottle-to-bottle' recycling in Japan and promoting the reduction of environmental pollution and decarbonisation. We are determined to further accelerate the ecological transition in Japan."

The new complex in Tsuyama is part of Veolia's "PlastiLoop" network, which brings together the Group's recycling facilities and other activities to develop the circular economy in the plastics sector. In Japan, Veolia now operates four plants for the recycling of plastic waste (PET, HDPE, PS, PP) as part of "PlastiLoop". Worldwide, "PlastiLoop" comprises a total of more than 40 recycling plants, which together recycled around 500,000 tonnes of plastic in 2023. The sites are located in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Norway, Sweden, the UK, Spain, Colombia, Indonesia, China, South Korea and Japan.
