Hordijk + Origin: Mass production of PET closures planned

Dutch packaging manufacturer Hordijk is planning to mass-produce PET closures in collaboration with US company Origin Materials.

According to a recent press release, both companies have agreed on a strategic partnership. Hordijk will use its PET extrusion lines to produce films that will be processed into closures in Origin's CapFormer lines. The CapFormer lines are to be installed at various Hordijk sites. However, further details have not yet been disclosed.

Origin Materials CEO John Bissell said: ‘Hordijk brings world-class manufacturing, a strong presence in Europe and significant global reach. In addition, Hordijk provides extrusion expertise that can reduce the capital costs of our CapFormer lines. We look forward to working together to produce billions of PET closures and take the packaging industry to the next level.’

Hordijk CEO Rik Hennink: ‘At Hordijk, we are convinced that the future of packaging is circular. Our investments in innovation and environmental friendliness are at the heart of everything we do. The partnership with Origin to scale up PET closure production fits perfectly with our vision. Monomaterial packaging like this is the way forward for sustainable, high-performance products.’

Based in West Sacramento, California, Origin Materials works with various partners to develop materials and technologies for reducing CO2 emissions in the plastics sector. In February of this year, the company commissioned its first commercial ‘CapFormer’ plant for the production of PET closures at its site in Reed City, Michigan. Last year, a strategic partnership was also agreed with Swiss packaging manufacturer Bachmann Group for the production of PET closures.

Hordijk produces plastic packaging for food, household and personal care products, and pharmaceuticals. It primarily processes (r)PET, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (HDPE) and polystyrene (PS) using thermoforming, injection moulding, extrusion blow moulding and foam moulding processes. The company has four sites in the Netherlands and a sales office in Germany. With a total of over 500 employees, Hordijk generates annual sales of around 125 million euros.
