BRT Hartner GmbH, part of the Eggersmann Group, has for the first time presented its own sensor-based, AI-supported sorting system, the "BRT Hartner AS Automatic Sorter." The solution was developed and produced as part of a strategic partnership with RTT System GmbH. The sorter combines an acceleration conveyor with optical detection and compressed air sorting. The central element is a "Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) camera," which provides additional information on material properties alongside high-resolution image data. The system also employs a "Sensor Fusion Concept," which merges data from NIR, color, 3D, and metal sensors directly at the raw data level. This aims to ensure complete datasets are available for analysis, which are then evaluated by a recognition algorithm based on extensive training material. The live assignment of materials can be viewed on an operating display; for lightweight packaging, packaging types are also recorded. According to the manufacturer, the architecture of the sensor fusion allows for subsequent expansion with additional sensor technologies. Optionally, the standard spectral AI can be supplemented with an object-recognizing AI, provided a color camera is integrated. The sorter is designed for materials that are difficult to separate using conventional methods. The AI is intended to be able to precisely distinguish both material types and object classes, which is particularly relevant for sorting various plastic fractions—for example, against the backdrop of growing requirements in mechanical and chemical plastic recycling. Applications in refuse-derived fuel production and general contaminant removal are also envisioned. For operation, the system uses commercially available illuminants and, according to the manufacturer, requires about half as many light sources as comparable HSI-based solutions. Maintenance work is facilitated by an extendable internal platform and optional access points on the sensor unit. The cooperation between BRT Hartner and RTT System combines BRT Hartner's international sales network and long-standing machine construction experience with RTT System's expertise in sensor-based analysis and inspection systems. Both companies have established solutions in the recycling sector: BRT Hartner in areas including mechanical separation, and RTT System in optical quality control and robot-assisted sorting technology.
