Wittmann Group: Expanded Production Plant Opened in Kunshan – Local Manufacturing of Injection Molding Machines

In mid-December, the Wittmann Group opened its expanded production plant in Kunshan, China. The occasion also marked the 20th anniversary of the site. Around 250 customers and partners attended the opening ceremony. With the expansion, Wittmann is broadening the scope of its local manufacturing: in addition to robots and peripheral equipment, injection molding machines will now also be produced in China.

According to the company, the new plant represents a strategic step in its development. The goal is to offer customers in China and across Asia integrated system solutions from a single source that are fully manufactured locally. Local production is expected to enable, among other things, shorter delivery times and cost advantages.

As part of the opening event, guests were able to tour the modernized production facility as well as the expanded technical center, which was already equipped with initial injection molding machine exhibits. In the future, the technical center and a newly created training area are to be used more intensively for training courses, events, and interdisciplinary project work.

Start of Machine Production with “EcoPrimus”
Machine production in China will initially start with the all-electric injection molding machine “EcoPrimus,” which was first presented at K 2025. Production is planned for the EcoPrimus in the 100-ton clamping force size. For the coming year, the group is aiming for a production volume of around 100 machines of this type at the Kunshan site.

Significant Expansion of Production Capacity
The existing robot and peripheral equipment divisions will also benefit from the plant expansion. Overall, production capacity has been doubled. The expansion includes more than 10,000 square meters of additional usable space, of which 6,500 square meters are allocated to production and 3,500 square meters to a new office building. This brings the total production area at the site to around 13,000 square meters.

In addition to the expansion of floor space, production processes have been reorganized with a focus on efficiency. Mechanical processing, assembly, and painting have been more closely integrated to optimize workflows.

Local Development Expertise
With the expansion, Wittmann China is positioning itself not only as a production site but also as a development location. In the newly established R&D center, products and solutions are to be developed that are specifically tailored to the requirements of Asian markets. The focus will include applications for packaging, medical technology, the automotive industry, and household appliances.

Long-Standing Presence in China
Wittmann has been present in China since 2001 with its own sales and service subsidiary. In 2005, local robot production began in Kunshan, followed later by the manufacture of additional peripheral equipment such as temperature control systems, conveying technology, dryers, and granulators. The company further expanded its activities in China in 2021 with the opening of an additional sales and service center in Dongguan in the south of the country.
