Borealis is investing 49 million euros to expand the production of "Borstar" Nextension polypropylene at its site in Burghausen, Germany. The aim of the investment is to accelerate the commercial production of next-generation single-site polypropylene (ssPP) and increase its availability for industrial applications.

According to Borealis, Borstar Nextension technology produces polypropylene materials with improved purity, processability, and performance. These materials are intended particularly for applications in packaging, healthcare, mobility, and fibers, and are designed to help companies meet increasing regulatory and market demands.

A focus of the investment lies in promoting mono-material solutions. The new PP grades are intended to enable the replacement of complex multi-layer structures that currently have limited recyclability. This supports a circular product design that promotes material savings, weight reductions, and efficiency increases along the value chain, complying with the requirements of European circular economy legislation.

In the packaging sector specifically, the materials are intended to help meet the requirements of the planned EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates fully recyclable packaging by 2030.
