T.EN: Polymer plants for BPCL

The Indian oil and petrochemical group Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has awarded two major contracts for the expansion of polymer capacities at its refinery in Bina, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

The Mumbai-based company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) was commissioned with the turnkey construction of a new polyethylene plant. L&T already reported the signing of the corresponding EPCC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Commissioning) agreement in a press release at the end of December. According to the announcement, the financial volume of the major contract is in the range of 50-100 billion INR (470-940 million EUR).

The new plant at the BPCL refinery will have capacities for the production of a total of 1.15 million tons per year of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). The technology for the new PE complex is licensed from the US company Univation Technologies (see plasticker news from Sept. 27, 2024). No information is available regarding the completion date.

The construction of a new polypropylene plant in Bina will be handled by the French industrial plant manufacturer Technip Energies (T.EN), which announced the signing of a corresponding EPCC agreement with BPCL in early January. This plant will have a capacity of 550,000 tons of PP and 50,000 tons of butene per year; the technology is supplied by the US chemical company W.R. Grace & Co. (see plasticker news from June 25, 2024).

Furthermore, T.EN also provided information about a contract from BPCL for the construction of a PRFCC plant for the catalytic cracking of petroleum residues at the group's site in Mumbai. An annual capacity of up to 3 million tons is planned. In its release, T.EN states the total value of both BPCL contracts to be between 250-500 million EUR.
