Sentiment in the German export industry has improved somewhat. The ifo Export Expectations rose to -1.2 points in January, up from -3.0 points in December. “Even though companies are less skeptical with regard to their international business, uncertainty remains high,” says Klaus Wohlrabe, Head of Surveys at ifo. “There are no clear signs of an upward trend for the first quarter of 2026.” The automotive industry and manufacturers of electrical equipment are somewhat more confident about international business and expect to increase their exports. In metal production and processing, the pessimism that has persisted for many years is noticeably receding. Export expectations rose to their highest level since February 2022, with positive and negative assessments currently in balance. In the beverage industry, companies expect a stable and expansive export environment. By contrast, manufacturers of clothing and food, and the printing industry continue to expect exports to decline.
