Plastics Recyclers Europe: Assessment of Plastic Recycling Technologies in Europe

Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) has presented its first comprehensive mapping of plastic recycling technologies used in Europe. The publication provides a data-driven overview of the current state of plastic recycling in Europe and identifies both existing technological capacities and remaining gaps along the value chain. The aim is to provide a sound basis for decision-making for stakeholders in the plastics industry, including brand owners, converters, and policymakers.

The report analyzes mechanical, solvent-based (dissolution), and chemical recycling processes across key waste streams, including packaging, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), end-of-life vehicles, as well as construction and building applications. It examines the entire journey of plastic waste, from collection and sorting to the recycling process itself. A central element of the analysis is a traffic light system that classifies recycling technologies according to their level of industrial establishment, ranging from early development stages to widely deployed processes.

The results show that mechanical recycling remains the most widespread and established technology in Europe. Dissolution recycling is predominantly still in pilot or early commercial phases, while chemical recycling processes are gradually transitioning into broader industrial application. Furthermore, the importance of efficient sorting processes is highlighted as a decisive factor for improving overall recycling performance.

The report is based on extensive interviews, data collection, site visits, and the systematic evaluation of technical literature and patents. As such, the publication serves as a current reference for the European plastic recycling sector. It highlights technological developments in various regions of Europe and emphasizes the importance of all process steps in reducing material losses, improving recyclability, and achieving high-quality recyclates.
