Indorama Ventures: Partnership with Nigerian Breweries and Genesis Energy to build a large-scale rPET plant in Nigeria

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited has entered into a strategic partnership with Nigerian Breweries Plc and Genesis Power & Energy Solutions Ltd to establish a large-scale recycled PET (rPET) production facility in Nigeria. Based on its planned capacity, the site in Lagos is expected to be one of the largest rPET plants in Africa.

The plant is designed for an annual capacity of up to 45,000 tonnes of food-grade rPET. Production is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027. The aim is to process used PET bottles into high-quality recycled material for packaging applications, thereby meeting demand for recyclate while reducing plastic waste.

The partners are combining expertise across the PET value chain. Indorama Ventures contributes technological know-how in PET recycling and is regarded as the world’s largest recycler of PET for beverage applications. Nigerian Breweries, a Heineken Group company, provides market knowledge and ties to the local beverage sector. Genesis Energy complements the project with infrastructure and energy solutions.

The project is linked to Nigeria’s 2020 plastic waste policy, which stipulates that by 2030 all plastic packaging should be recyclable, biodegradable, compostable, or reusable. Lagos is considered a key location for expanding national recycling capacity.

Indorama Ventures currently operates 20 recycling plants in 11 countries and says it has processed more than 160 billion used PET bottles into recycled material to date. The facility in Nigeria is the company’s first recycling investment in Africa and also the group’s largest recycling plant so far.
