Uhde Inventa-Fischer: New PET Plant for Turkish Packaging Manufacturer Köksan

(Photo: Köksan).
thyssenkrupp Uhde subsidiary Uhde Inventa-Fischer has signed a contract with Turkish packaging manufacturer Köksan for the delivery of a PET production plant in Yumurtalık. The plant is designed for an annual capacity of 324,000 tonnes of PET resin. The product is intended for packaging applications as well as bulk continuous filament (BCF). Start-up is scheduled for 2028.

The technological basis is Uhde Inventa-Fischer’s Melt-To-Resin (“MTR”) process. This continuous polycondensation process operates without solid-state post-condensation. According to the company, this can reduce energy consumption, capital expenditure, and operating and maintenance costs compared with conventional PET processes. The CO₂ footprint related to fuel and electricity consumption is also expected to be reduced by up to 30 percent.

thyssenkrupp Uhde’s scope of supply includes the technology license, basic and detail engineering, as well as delivery of the key plant components. Training of the operating personnel is also included. The MTR technology is based on a two-reactor configuration using the patented Espree and Discage reactors to achieve high melt viscosities.

The PET resin to be produced in Yumurtalık is intended for the Turkish market as well as for export markets in the Middle East, the Americas, Europe, and Africa.

According to its own information, Köksan produces PET resin, preforms, bottles, containers, films, and other plastic packaging products, as well as recyclates. The company also has recycling capacities and a liquid storage terminal with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes in the Adana Free Zone. Köksan states its annual PET resin capacity at 500,000 tonnes.

thyssenkrupp Uhde is active as an engineering contractor and technology provider for the chemical industry. Its portfolio includes technologies for basic chemicals, fertilizers, polymers, as well as applications in green hydrogen and sustainable chemicals.
