BASF expands capacity for HALS and NOR-HALS plastic additives

According to the supplier, BASF’s NOR HALS solutions ensure a long service life even under intense sunlight and in acidic climates, reduce plastic accumulation in the soil through easier collection, and lead to less film breakage - (Image: BASF).
BASF is expanding production capacity for its standard HALS and NOR-HALS plastic additives to meet growing global demand for high-performance plastics and secure supply of key additive technologies.

The company said the investment responds to increasingly demanding application conditions, including higher UV exposure, more volatile weather patterns and stricter environmental requirements. These trends are driving demand for plastics with improved durability, longer service life and lower material consumption.

BASF is placing particular emphasis on NOR-HALS technology for applications exposed to harsh climatic and chemical conditions. According to the company, the technology is designed to protect plastic films against factors such as intense UV radiation, elevated temperatures, sulfur-containing substances that create an acidic microclimate, and more aggressive crop-protection chemicals.

Agricultural films are a key target area, especially in China, the world’s largest plasticulture market. BASF said rising performance requirements in greenhouse, mulch, tunnel, silage and stretch films are being driven by stronger sunlight, higher temperatures, chemical exposure and the trend toward thinner film structures.

The company added that NOR-HALS technology helps maintain the structural and optical stability of films over longer periods of use, reducing film breakage and supporting longer replacement cycles. BASF also said the additives can enable the production of thinner films without sacrificing strength or durability.

In addition, BASF announced abrasion-resistant NOR formulations aimed at reducing dust formation during handling, processing and masterbatch production, supporting cleaner manufacturing conditions and improved workplace safety.
