Borouge International: Expansion of Cable Materials Production

Plastics group Borouge International is expanding its production capacities for materials used in the cable industry.

According to a press release, a new plant for semiconductor compounds (Semicon) is to be built in Cheonan, South Korea. The plans mainly include facilities for the production of compounds for medium- and high-voltage applications. With this new project, Borouge is responding to strong demand in Asia while also further expanding its presence in the region. However, no details have yet been provided on the exact capacities of the planned plant in Cheonan.

Meanwhile, the group has begun construction of a new plant at its site in Stenungsund, Sweden, for the production of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) for power cable insulation. The plant is to produce a new generation of homopolymer XLPE materials for insulating medium-voltage cables (MV cables) used in power distribution networks. No capacity figures have yet been disclosed for this plant either. According to earlier reports, production is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2027.

Borouge International also announced that the expansion of its XLPE plant at the Al Ruwais site in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has now been completed. Thanks to additional capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year, the complex’s annual production now reaches up to a total of 200,000 tonnes of XLPE.

With these three expansion projects, Borouge International aims to provide more reliable supply to its customers in Asia, Europe and the Middle East by expanding regional production. Group executive Craig Arnold commented: “With more than 60 years of experience in the cable industry, we know how important proximity is in delivering the solutions our customers need. These investments strengthen our presence in three key markets and enable us to better meet the growing requirements of the energy transition.”

Borouge International was formed only a few weeks ago through the merger of Borouge and Borealis, two industry companies controlled by Austria’s OMV and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).
