Covestro is investing in a new steam compressor at its Dormagen site. According to the company, the project is the group’s largest energy efficiency initiative to date. The investment is in the low double-digit million-euro range. From 2027, the compressor is expected to reduce Covestro’s energy demand in Germany by two percent per year compared with 2025. Savings are expected to be in the low three-digit gigawatt-hour range, along with more than 40,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. Technically, the system uses a principle similar to a heat pump. In the production of TDI, a component used in flexible foam, steam is generated, but its temperature has so far not been sufficient for broad use in production processes. The new compressor raises the steam to a higher temperature and pressure level, allowing it to be used as process steam. This returns previously unused waste heat to the production cycle. The project is part of Covestro’s energy efficiency strategy. The company aims to reduce energy consumption per tonne of product produced by 20 percent by 2030 compared with 2020. Between 2005 and 2022, Covestro says it had already reduced energy consumption by around 40 percent. Construction in Dormagen is scheduled to begin at the end of 2026. The compressor is expected to go into operation in mid-2027. More information: www.covestro.com |
