Spanish plastics processor Grupo Armando Álvarez has commissioned a plastic recycling plant in Lorca, in the southern Spanish region of Murcia. According to the company, the new facility will initially start operations with a recycling capacity of 10,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year. Over the next five years, this capacity is to be tripled. The complex was built on a 5-hectare site in the Polígono Industrial de Lorca industrial park, with investments totaling EUR 10.8 million. The plant is operated by the newly established subsidiary Recursos Circulares and employs around 25 people. In the first phase, the new facility will primarily recycle production waste from the plants of Solplast, a company belonging to Grupo Armando Álvarez. Solplast manufactures polyethylene films for agricultural applications in the Murcia region and has a total production capacity of more than 60,000 tonnes per year. The opening of the recycling plant is part of Grupo Armando Álvarez’s strategy to establish a circular economy. According to the company, it aims to integrate plastic recycling as a strategic pillar of its business model. Grupo Armando Álvarez is headquartered in Torrelavega, in the northern Spanish region of Cantabria, and brings together several Spanish plastics companies, including Solplast as well as Envaflex, Reyde, Aspla, Silvalac, Plásticos Vanguardia, Macresac, and MRI. The group’s product portfolio includes films and other flexible packaging materials, plastic containers, agricultural films, and geomembranes.
