Wevo-Chemie: Polyurethane Potting Resin for Durable Battery Packs in Power Tools

Wevo-Chemie GmbH has introduced "Wevopur 512 FLE", a polyurethane-based electrical potting resin for encapsulating lithium-ion battery packs used in power tools. The material is designed to protect sensitive electronic components in confined installation spaces from mechanical and environmental stresses while supporting reproducible high-volume manufacturing.

Battery systems are among the key components of modern power tools. As requirements for performance, robustness, and service life continue to increase, battery potting is becoming an increasingly important manufacturing step. The two-component polyurethane system offered by Wevo is designed for various battery concepts and is intended in particular to improve the protection of printed circuit boards and electronic components.

According to the company, the material has a hardness of Shore A 80 and combines mechanical stability with vibration-damping properties. Its tough-elastic structure and elongation at break of approximately 100 percent are intended to help absorb vibrations and impacts. According to Wevo, the effectiveness has been confirmed in shake tests simulating transportation and operational stresses.

For processing, "Wevopur 512 FLE" has a viscosity of approximately 1,000 mPa·s after mixing the resin and hardener. This enables the potting compound to reliably fill even complex geometries while reducing the risk of air entrapment. The company also offers customization of process parameters to match customer-specific cycle and processing times.

Additional properties include a thermal conductivity of 0.8 W/m·K, optimized adhesion to common plastics, corrosion protection, and flame-retardant performance in accordance with UL 94, achieving classifications of V-0 at a material thickness of 6 mm and V-2 at 1.5 mm.

Wevo develops and manufactures customized potting compounds, adhesives, and sealants based on polyurethane, epoxy, and silicone. According to the company, it supplies more than 1,250 customers in over 50 countries and offers both standard products and customer-specific material formulations. Material properties, such as the processing window, can be tailored to the requirements of the respective application.
