Exel Composites: Partnership with Original Composites & Fiberglass to Advance the Use of Circular Glass Fiber Materials

Composite manufacturer Exel Composites has expanded its collaboration with Original Composites & Fiberglass to increase the use of circular materials in the industrial production of fiber-reinforced composites. As part of the partnership, the "Sustaina" Continuous Filament Mat (CFM) will be deployed on a commercial scale across Europe in Exel's pultrusion manufacturing processes.

According to the companies, several hundred tonnes of Sustaina CFM will be processed annually. The initiative forms part of Exel's sustainability strategy to increase the use of circular economy materials without compromising process stability or component performance.

Sustaina is an ISCC+ certified glass fiber solution containing a calculated 50 percent share of circular raw materials based on the mass balance approach. According to the company, this enables the replacement of at least 500 kilograms of virgin fossil-based raw materials with circular feedstocks for every tonne produced.

The continuous filament mat has been designed for seamless integration into existing manufacturing processes without requiring process modifications. Exel states that the material delivers unchanged performance in terms of thickness, fiber distribution, processing behavior, and mechanical properties, which are particularly critical for continuous pultrusion applications.

The partnership is intended to accelerate the transition of recycled materials from pilot projects to industrial-scale production while meeting growing demand for sustainably sourced composite materials. At the same time, Original Composites & Fiberglass is introducing a new brand identity with a stronger focus on circular economy solutions and innovation throughout the composites value chain.
