Ineos Inovyn: Acquisition Secures UK EDC and Chlor-Alkali Production

Ineos Inovyn plans to acquire the interests and production assets at its Runcorn site in the UK previously held by Vynova. The company has entered into an agreement to acquire the remaining 50% stake in Runcorn MCP Limited, as well as the assets and employees associated with ethylene dichloride (EDC) production from Vynova Runcorn Limited. Vynova Runcorn entered insolvency proceedings in 2025.

The transaction is intended to bring the entire chlor-alkali and EDC value chain in Runcorn under the ownership of Ineos Inovyn. According to the company, the facility is the only EDC production site in the UK. EDC is a key intermediate in the production of vinyl chloride and, consequently, PVC.

The Runcorn site also plays a central role in the UK’s chlorine supply. According to Ineos Inovyn, around 98% of the chlorine used for drinking water treatment in the UK comes from Runcorn. Chlor-alkali products from the site are also used in food production and in the pharmaceutical, healthcare and construction industries, among others.

With the acquisition, Ineos Inovyn aims in particular to safeguard production and supply chains at the site over the long term. The transaction remains subject to the required legal and regulatory approvals. Completion is expected later in 2026.

According to the company, Ineos Inovyn employs around 4,000 people and operates production, sales and marketing activities in eight European countries. The company generates annual revenue of approximately €3 billion and has an annual commercial production volume of around 9 million tonnes. Its portfolio includes PVC, specialty PVC, organic chlorine derivatives, chlor-alkali products, hydrogen and specialty chemicals.
