BASF Eyes New MDI Complex in India

BASF is considering a new MDI production complex at Dahej in Gujarat, India, as it looks to expand local supply amid expected growth in regional polyurethane demand.

The feasibility study is at an advanced stage, and BASF India Polyurethanes Private Limited has already secured an industrial site for the project. A final investment decision is still pending and will depend on the study results and regulatory approvals.

The company said demand for polyurethane materials in India is expected to benefit from urbanization, infrastructure investment and rising industrial output.

Dahej Infrastructure Already in Place
BASF India Limited already operates an MDI splitter and polyurethane production facilities at Dahej. The planned complex would build on this existing infrastructure and strengthen BASF’s local production base.

The project would also increase regional supply to customers in India and neighboring markets.

Part of Global MDI Network
BASF currently produces MDI in Geismar, US; Antwerp, Belgium; Chongqing and Caojing, China; and Yeosu, South Korea. The company is also completing an MDI capacity expansion in Geismar with an investment of around USD 1 billion.

No details have yet been disclosed on the planned capacity, investment volume or start-up date for the Dahej project.
