Sortco Adds New Sorting System for Transparent and Semi-Transparent Plastic Pellets

Sortco GmbH & Co. KG, a specialist in the optical sorting of plastic pellets, is expanding its sorting capacity at its Niederzissen site with a new "Pellet Sorter" system scheduled to go into operation at the end of September 2026. The machine is designed specifically for the optical inspection of transparent and semi-transparent plastic pellets and is intended to detect and remove both embedded defects and surface contamination from the material stream.

New system for optical defect detection
According to the company, the new sorting system offers a throughput of more than two tonnes per hour. The investment further expands Sortco's existing machinery at its production site in Niederzissen. The system is aimed at materials where transparency or partial transparency makes the reliable detection of contamination and optical defects particularly challenging.

Sortco specialises in the optical sorting of plastic pellets using optoelectronic systems and high-speed cameras. Defective particles are identified and selectively removed from the material stream. According to the company, the systems are capable of detecting defects down to a size of 50 µm. Additional processing steps include dedusting, screening and metal separation.

Six sorting lines with an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes
At its Niederzissen site, Sortco operates six sorting lines with a combined annual sorting capacity of around 30,000 tonnes. The production environment is geared, among other things, to the requirements of medical and food-contact applications.

In 2023, the company introduced the BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety, covering hygiene management for food quality and safety, as well as its Medical Grades standard. According to Sortco, the latter exceeds GMP requirements and is intended to ensure that the sorting operation, designated as a "Purity Area", can meet stringent customer requirements. The company also operates its own laboratory for quality assurance.

For material handling, plastic pellets can be supplied in bags, big bags, octabins or in bulk by silo truck. Sortco has been active in the market since 2015. Following the opening of its new operating site in 2021, the company also relocated its registered office to Niederzissen in 2026.
