Plastics recycler Morssinkhof-Rymoplast officially opened a new recycling plant for plastic packaging waste in Lommel, Belgium, on 30 October 2026. Around €30 million has been invested in the facility, located in the Kristalpark III industrial park. The plant is designed to process up to 40,000 tonnes of material annually. In the long term, the site is expected to create 65 jobs. The 4.1-hectare site processes used packaging made from polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). This includes yoghurt and margarine tubs, ready-meal trays, as well as bottles and containers for milk, shampoo and detergents. A distinctive feature of the plant's processing concept is the additional sorting of already pre-sorted packaging waste by polymer type and colour. The materials are then shredded and washed. This process is intended to produce high-purity, colour-separated plastic fractions suitable for manufacturing new products and packaging, particularly for cosmetics and household applications. Of the plant's total annual capacity, around 24,000 tonnes are allocated to packaging waste collected through Belgium's PMD collection system. This is based on a nine-year agreement with Belgian packaging recovery organisation Fost Plus, which is intended to ensure a continuous supply of material. According to Fost Plus, the commissioning of the Lommel facility means that all six recycling plants developed as part of Belgium's recycling infrastructure expansion programme, launched in 2020, are now operational. The proportion of plastic packaging recycled within Belgium has reportedly increased from 12% in 2021 to 51% today. Demand for Recyclates Remains a Challenge Despite the expansion of recycling capacity, Morssinkhof-Rymoplast continues to face significant challenges in selling its recycled materials. The currently limited demand for recycled plastics makes it difficult to operate existing capacities economically. The company is therefore calling for stronger incentives to encourage the use of recyclates, as well as fair competitive conditions in relation to imported virgin plastics and recycled materials. With the minimum recycled content requirements under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) set to apply from 2030, a corresponding increase in demand will be necessary.
