Abundia: Plastic recycling plant in Texas in the planning stage

The US-based Abundia Global Impact Group is planning to build its first plastic recycling plant in the state of Texas.

According to a press release, the complex is to be built in Baytown, west of Houston. A ten-hectare site has already been acquired for the project in the Cedar Port Industrial Park there.

The new plant will use a thermochemical process licensed from the US company Alterra Energy to produce raw materials for new plastics and other petrochemical products from plastic waste that has been difficult to recycle up to now. No details have yet been provided on the planned capacities. According to the press release, ‘development’ of the complex is to begin next year.

Abundia CEO Ed Gillespie said: "Since its foundation, Abundia has not only strived to find and develop the best technological solutions for the recycling industry, but also to ensure that these solutions are located in strategic locations. Cedar Port Industrial Park offers Abundia an ideal location with established distribution channels via rail, shipping and road connections."

In the press release, Abundia announces the expansion of the recycling complex in the Cedar Port Industrial Park into a hub for the development of recycling and circular technologies in the USA. In addition, the company plans to work with Alterra Energy to develop further recycling facilities in the USA and Europe.

Alterra Energy is already operating a large-scale plant in Akron, Ohio, that has the capacity to recycle 20,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year. In addition, a licence agreement has been signed with Freepoint Eco-Systems Holdings for the construction of a complex with a recycling capacity of 190,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year on the US Gulf Coast. In Europe, the Alterra process is marketed by the Finnish oil and petrochemicals group Neste, which has also held a minority interest in Alterra since 2020.
