Aduro: Canadians plan recycling plant in the Netherlands

The Canadian company Aduro Clean Technologies is planning to build a plastics recycling facility in the Netherlands.

As Aduro announced in a press release at the end of January, the plant is to be built at the Chemelot industrial park in Sittard-Geleen, in the southern Dutch province of Limburg. The complex is intended to serve as the first larger demonstration facility for the hydrochemolytic technology developed by Aduro and will initially have the capacity to recycle around 10,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year. However, no date for commissioning has yet been announced.

In recent months, Aduro had initially examined several potential locations in Canada, Europe, and Mexico for the facility. Ultimately, Chemelot was chosen primarily because of its existing infrastructure, the availability of feedstocks through an established circular plastics value chain, and its proximity to downstream partners and customers.

Aduro CEO Ofer Vicus said: “The decision to locate in Chemelot marks a pivotal point in the scaling path we outlined last year. From the outset, our goal has been to move from pilot-scale validation to an industrial facility that can operate under real-world conditions, deliver commercially relevant results, and support future growth. Chemelot offers the infrastructure, industrial integration, and expansion opportunities required not only for our first facility, but also as a foundation for broader commercial deployment at larger processing capacities.”

The hydrochemolytic technology developed by Aduro uses water as the primary agent in a chemical recycling process for plastic waste, bitumen, and heavy oil. To date, the company has been testing the technology at a pilot plant at its headquarters in London, near Toronto, in the Canadian province of Ontario. To finance the new facility, the publicly listed Aduro placed new shares worth USD 20 million at the end of last year.
