Kreyenborg: New Infrared Drum for Batch applications

For years the Kreyenborg Infrared drum IRD has been successfully used for continuous thermal handling of bulk goods. Now Kreyenborg Plant Technology GmbH (www.kreyenborg.de) has developed an infrared drum (Photo) for the use with batch production and filed this application for a patent.

The new batch drum follows on from the advantages of the continuous machine: Quick material treatment with low energy requirement. This combination is achieved by the use of infrared radiation, which directly enters into the material. In comparison with conventional systems the drying times are reduced from hours to minutes.

Also the basic construction of the machine is similar: The material is fed into a rotating drum, in which one or several infrared radiators are arranged. However with the batch system no screw coil, which conveys the material through the drum between inlet and outlet, is used. In fact the material is thermically treated in the closed drum for a defined period. Thereafter the material is discharged out of the machine by reversal of the rotating direction. This is realised by means of special outlet blocking devices, which guide the material across the outlet during the treatment and which allow for an access to the outlet in the opposite direction.

The Kreyenborg batch drum is suited for all bulk goods. In stainless steel execution it may also be used in the food production and pharmacy. By means of the closed drum a userdefined cycle for heating, drying and crystallisation may be realised. Contrary to conventional systems the product thereby is in steady motion.
