ifo: German Export Expectations Rise in February

Sentiment in the German export industry has improved again. The ifo Export Expectations rose to +2.6 points in February, up from -0.8 points in January. “The export economy is starting the new year with a bit of tailwind,” says Timo Wollmershäuser, Head of Forecasts at the ifo Institute. “However, it’s still too soon to talk of a broad-based and dynamic recovery.”

Manufacturers of electronic and optical products in particular are more optimistic about international business. Stable export business is also emerging in the automotive sector, where expectations have risen once again. Expectations among manufacturers of food and furniture turned positive, with international sales expected to increase. Although the indicator improved in the metal sector, exports are currently expected to remain constant.
By contrast, the paper, printing and chemical industries are expecting exports to decline.

“The latest decisions on US tariff policy are creating new uncertainty,” says Wollmershäuser. “Constant changes to tariff regulations make planning more difficult for companies.”
