Sentiment in the German export industry has deteriorated. The ifo Export Expectations fell to minus 5.5 points in May, down from minus 1.2 points in April. “Despite an upturn in export business in the first quarter, the outlook remains challenging,” says Timo Wollmershäuser, Head of Forecasts at ifo. “Geopolitical uncertainty remains high.” Expectations in the automotive industry have taken a hit. After four very optimistic months, exports are now expected to decline. International sales are also likely to fall in the metal industry. Energy-intensive industries in general are coming under pressure on global markets and anticipate declining sales. By contrast, the electrical industry remains moderately optimistic in its export outlook, albeit less so than in the previous month. Furniture manufacturers, too, expect to see an upturn in exports.
