Syklo Starts Up Finland’s Largest Plastics Recycling Plant

Finnish waste management and recycling company Syklo has started operations at a new mixed plastics recycling facility in Hyvinkää, north of Helsinki.

According to a recent company announcement, the new plant has an annual processing capacity of 50,000 tonnes of plastic waste, making it the largest facility of its kind in Finland. The investment increases the country’s overall plastics recycling capacity by around 50 percent.

At the Hyvinkää plant, Syklo produces recycled polypropylene and polyethylene grades, including rPP, rHDPE and rLDPE, which are marketed in pellet form under the Sykloplast brand.

The facility uses the Baffled Oscillation Separation System, or BOSS, developed by UK-based Impact Recycling to sort and process mixed plastic waste.

Syklo is also producing biocomposites under the Syklocomp brand using its proprietary Wet-Web technology. According to the company, the materials can be used as alternatives to glass-fibre-reinforced plastics and other engineering polymers in applications including packaging and electronics. Initial production capacity for Syklocomp is 8,000 tonnes per year.

Now is the right time to help shape the circular economy market. The recently adopted EU End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation and the PPWR are further strengthening demand for recycled materials.”

Syklo said it invested a total of EUR 70–80 million in the new recycling facility. The Hyvinkää project also created more than 100 new jobs.
