Renolit: New Geomembrane Plant Opened in Pune, India

Plastics processor Renolit opened a new plant for the production of geomembranes in Pune, India, on 14 October 2026. The facility is designed for an annual production capacity of 6,000 tonnes and employs around 30 people. According to the company, construction took 15 months, with the groundbreaking ceremony held on 15 April 2025.

The plant primarily focuses on plastic geomembranes for reservoirs at pumped-storage hydropower plants. It can also produce tunnel membranes and specialised waterproofing systems for dam rehabilitation. The investment comes amid the expansion of integrated renewable energy storage projects in India, which combine solar, wind and hydropower with pumped-storage facilities.

The geomembranes provide watertight sealing for reservoirs and must withstand both hydraulic loads and ground movements. According to Renolit, the membranes can accommodate settlement and seismic activity. They are UV-resistant and designed to perform under a wide range of extreme climatic conditions. The company states that they can have a service life of up to 100 years. In the field of hydraulic engineering waterproofing, Renolit cooperates with Swiss specialist Carpi Tech, which uses the geomembranes in pumped-storage hydropower plants, among other applications.

With the additional manufacturing site, Renolit aims to supply the Indian and Asia-Pacific markets more directly, shorten transport distances and facilitate on-site quality control. The plant is part of the company's "Roof & Water Care" business unit. Renolit has already been producing "Renolit Wood-Stock", a wood-plastic composite material for the automotive and construction industries, in Pune since 2010.
